Decision intelligence

Decision intelligence is the discipline of improving how an organization makes decisions, not just how it finds information. In practice it means AI grounded in the company's own knowledge, producing outputs with source references and calibrated confidence, measured against decision outcomes: whether the calls the business depends on got faster, safer, and more consistent.

How is decision intelligence different from business intelligence?

Business intelligence describes what happened: dashboards, reports, and metrics that summarize the past. Decision intelligence works on the step after the dashboard, the judgment call itself. Which proposal terms to accept, which anomaly in a portfolio deserves action, which design deviation is acceptable. BI informs the person deciding; decision intelligence improves the deciding.

It also differs from knowledge search and from generic AI assistants. Search improves finding. Assistants improve drafting. Neither attaches accountability to a conclusion. Decision intelligence is defined by exactly that: outputs a decision-maker can check, weigh, and defend.

What does decision intelligence require in practice?

Three things, and they are the anatomy of a knowledge and control layer. First, structured company knowledge, including the judgment of senior experts, not just documents; captured well, this becomes decision DNA. Second, controlled outputs: source references, calibrated confidence, and abstention when sources are insufficient. Third, measurement against decisions rather than activity, because a decision intelligence deployment is judged on outcomes, not usage.

Why is the category rising now?

Because the first wave of enterprise AI was judged and found wanting. MIT NANDA’s 2025 research found 95% of generative AI pilots delivered no measurable P&L impact, and boards have started asking for outcomes rather than demos. The response taking shape across the industry is to stop treating AI as a smarter search box and start treating it as infrastructure for decisions, with the grounding and controls that word implies.
